Incoming Freshmen Deadlines

Major Deadlines

Please note that the dates below are NOT accurate. Please refer to the official OIE/CMU mails/letters that you may receive. However, the process listed below was still the same for me when I first came, so you could take it as a rough guide...

- Tim 5 Apr 2008

31st May

Return housing applications. Late applications will be processed after those submitted before the dateline, which means the chances of getting the rooms of your choice is very low. You may even be assigned to temporary housing. They will process all on-time applications based on when your enrollment deposit was received. So for the guys who deferred due to NS, you'll get a higher chance of getting your choice if you paid the deposit before the current year.

15th July

CMU will have processed most housing applications.

3rd August

CMU will mail out the official check-in letters with details about arriving to campus. Don't freak out if you don't receive this before you leave, international mails are always delayed.

21st August (Tentative date based on Aug 03's move in date for international students, which was two saturdays before lessons start)

Move-in on campus. If you plan to arrive before that, you can try requesting an earlier move-in from the school but that's subjected to CMU housing's approval. Inform SSA of your arrival if you need help.

The main thing is don't panic, things can go wrong and will go wrong. Anticipate it and it will be okay. Everything can be resolved one...

Just make sure you constantly bug the admissions people thru email as to when they're sending out the necessary forms, like the big registration packet, housing forms (sent separately), and most importantly the I-20 which will allow you to apply for the US Visa.

And also check your bio data page every now and then, make sure that all your details are up to date.

You can expect to receive most of the forms in May - June. And you'll probably be getting some registration stuff from your respective departments too.

Another thing to add on. If you've received your packages late, such as housing forms, meal plan forms etc, which results in you missing the deadline, do not worry or freak out. Email the respective people immediately and COMPLAIN. Let them know what happened and request that they do not forfeit you or give you any penalty just because you're submitting your applications late. They are QUITE reasonable in this sense. However, do not expect that they'll remove the penalty completely. For example, if you submit the housing application late, your choice of housing might still be affected.

Something for the CS majors to note is the CS package! Inside you'll find many many forms, as well as a calc placement test and a discrete maths placement test. If you intend to take 15-211 in the first sem, then make sure you do well on the discrete maths test!

Also, try not to sit on the package once it arrives. What happened during my year was that CS majors only get to register for courses during the orientation, and the order in which you register is the order in which those packets are returned! So, once you get it, don't hurry through it, but don't wait till the last minute either =)
